In July 2023, Performance Livestock Analytics was divested by Zoetis and subsequently reacquired by the original founders.
While the team saw a significant downsizing, my responsibilities have largely remained the same. My primary focus has been on system stability, ranging from test development, architectural improvements, reducing technical debt, and shoring up cross-team communications and pitfalls.
In April 2020, Performance Livestock Analytics was acquired by Zoetis, and was folded into the Precision Animal Health branch of the company. The primary focus remained on Performance Beef, though a shift in focus from innovative functionality to a scalable system changed the scope of priorities.
Most of my work is done using PHP, MySQL, and MongoDB. In addition to the Performance Beef platform, I am focused on the development of billing systems, tools for internal use, and system monitoring utilities.
While not a core component of the job, I also have experience in collaboration with external teams, database architecture and design, and data pipelines for third-party CRMs.
Recently, I have been starting to learn Golang, Vue.js, and RabbitMQ, in order to be more effective when collaborating with other teams.
I began an internship with Performance Livestock Analytics during my final year at Iowa State University. My first task was to rebuild a livestock management platform called Performance Beef, with a focus on intuitive user experience.
I continued to work here after graduating, continuously improving my skills and the scope of my responsibilities. Most of my work was done using PHP and MySQL, though by necessity of a small team I also got to experience iOS app development, system monitoring, and working directly with customers to diagnose issues.
I started volunteering with the Iowa Ornithologists' Union as a website developer, in order to help out the original developer of the site.
It's a big world, and there isn't enough time to become an expert at everything. I love learning, though, so I've tried a lot of different things!
